Shell has pulled out of the bidding war for East African oil explorer Cove Energy just days after extending its offer for the company by a further two weeks until July 25.

The UK oil major’s withdrawal should pave the way for Thailand’s state-owned PTT, whose 240p-a-share offer values Cove at about US$1.9bn, to acquire the company.
